Question No. 1, how much is it worth? is 17. 5 billion euro, which is just over $34 Billion New Zealand over the next four years.  The Framework Programmes run for 5 years but the first year of the current one overlaps with the last year of the previous.  The evolution of the framework programmes from the first one in 1984 to the current one shows a huge increase in funding and in FP6 there is an 8% increase in real terms over the FP5.  Although 34 Billion NZ Dollars might seem like a lot, in Europe this amount represents only about 6% of the total EU spending on public (non military) research. Which means there's about another $300 billion across Europe to tap into.  The Sixth Framework Programme is split into three pillars:

  • Focussing and integrating the Community research area which is the thematic pillar
  • Structuring the ERA, which is the horizontal pillar
  • Strengthening the Foundations of the ERA , which is the underpinning pillar

Each Pillar has been allocated a set amount of funds.  The difference between 16.270 and 17.5 is for activities under EURATOM....next....
