New Zealand Parliament opens with an EU Bash at the Backbencher

EU and Member States Heads of Mission welcomed Hon Dr Lockwood Smith, Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament, Minister Georgina te Heuheu, Leader of the Opposition Phil Goff and 25 other Members of Parliament to celebrate the Opening of the New Zealand Parliament on 9th February.

About a hundred guests were present, including CEOs of Ministries and Hon. Consuls of EU Member States. HE Ambassador Marcos Gomez Martinez, representing the EU Presidency in New Zealand, and Mr George Cunningham, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the EU Delegation, spoke about the Lisbon Treaty and the establishment of the European External Action Service. 

Charles Chauvel MP, Chair of the New Zealand European Union Parliamentary Friendship Group, explained how Parliament might make the most of the EU Delegation's presence in Wellington. The event showed the EU in transition to its new world role.
