AMBASSADOR DAVID DALY'S ACCREDITATION CEREMONY
WELLINGTON NEW ZEALAND,
17 TH FEBRUARY 2009
The ceremony commenced with the sounding of a bugle and a Maori welcome ceremony.
Ambassador Daly took up the traditional Maori challenge by picking up the dart laid on the ground, carefully keeping his eyes firmly fixed on the Maori warrior gesticulating in front of him.
At the conclusion of the challenge ceremony, the Ambassador met Maori elders and exchanged greetings with a hongi.
The Ambassador was then escorted to the saluting dais. The Guard of Honour presents arms while the bugler played the General Salute. The Guard Commander invited the Ambassador to inspect the Guard.
Accompanied by the Guard Commander, the Ambassador reviewed the Guard, front and rear ranks.
On completing the inspection, the Ambassador returned to the dais. The Guard once again presented arms and the General Salute was played. The Ambassador then left the dais.
The Ambassador and members of the accompanying party entered Government House Vogel. When the Governor-General was ready to receive the Ambassador, he and the accompanying party was escorted into the drawing room and took up their positions.
The Chief of Protocol formally presented the Ambassador to the Governor-General. The Ambassador delivered his formal statement and speech. At the conclusion of the speech, the Ambassador handed his Letters of Credence and Recall to the Governor-General. The Governor-General made a brief speech in reply.
The Governor-General welcomes the Ambassador and introduces him to the Hon Pansy Wong, Minister for Ethnic Affairs, Minister of Women's Affairs, Associate Minister for ACC, and Associate Minister of Energy & Resources. The Ambassador introduced accompanying party to the Governor-General and the Minister. The event then continued with other Ambassadors accredited that day over drinks and lunch.
Ambassador David Daly gave his first major address: "The EU: Tackling the Global Financial Crisis" to the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs in Wellington. He visited the NZ Parliament and held a round of meetings with officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He also found time with his wife Aideen to enjoy the work of pre-eminent European artists at the wonderful Monet exhibition that has just hit New Zealand.
Accreditation Ceremony Speech
Address to His Excellency, Mr. Anand Satyanand,
Governor-General of New Zealand
by Ambassador David Daly,
Delegation of the European Union to New Zealand ,
on the occasion of the presentation of his Letter of Credence
17 February 2009
Your Excellency, I have the honour to present to you the Letter of Credence which His Excellency Mr. José Manuel Barroso, President of the Commission of the European Communities, has addressed to you, accrediting me as Head of Delegation of the Commission of the European Communities to New Zealand. I also have the honour to present the Letter of Recall of my predecessor.
Your Excellency, to be the new European Commission Head of Delegation to New Zealand is an honour, a pleasure and a challenge for me.
It is an honour to be accredited to New Zealand. The European Commission holds New Zealand in high esteem as a significant political and trading partner, with important links in particular to the South Pacific and Asia . The Commission appreciates New Zealand's role on many issues, including those such as climate change, international economic issues, non-proliferation and human rights.
It is a pleasure because of the extraordinary degree of "likemindedness" between us. We are both democratic societies with similar principles and values. We are committed to peace and security, not just for our citizens, but for the world.
The work to come will also be a challenge. Our strong relations are delineated in the Joint Declaration on Cooperation and Relations , signed in 2007. I look forward to working towards the development of these relations further.
As you are aware, I myself am based in Canberra. Nevertheless, let me assure you that I intend to visit New Zealand regularly, and my delegation in Wellington will continue always to be available.
Your Excellency, thank you for your attention and hospitality.
