European Union- New Zealand Joint Declaration adopted today
A new Joint Declaration on Relations and Cooperation between the European Union and New Zealand is being adopted in Lisbon, Portugal today between European Commissioner Mrs Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Portuguese Foreign Minister Mr Luis Amado representing the current European Union Presidency, and New Zealand Foreign Minister Mr Winston Peters. The meeting is part of regular six-monthly European Union-New Zealand Ministerial consultations.
The Joint Declaration sets out a detailed action programme for the EU and New Zealand for the next five years in such areas as global and regional security, counter-terrorism and human rights, visas, aid coordination in the Pacific, economic cooperation, trade and climate change. New agreements are anticipated in the fields of science and technology and air services while work will continue towards a wine agreement and a customs cooperation agreement.
Mr George Cunningham, newly-arrived Chargé d'Affaires of the European Commission Delegation in New Zealand, said in Wellington today: "Europeans and New Zealanders are like-minded in their approach to the world. This Declaration sets out a very practical programme for us to work together, both amongst ourselves and in international fora, to achieve common goals".
