European Union - New Zealand Economic Relations

NZ EU economic relations (pdf doc 102 kbs)The European Union is New Zealand's second largest trading partner after Australia. For the year to December 2007, two way bilateral trade was in excess of NZ$12 billion. This consisted of New Zealand exports to the European Union worth NZ$6.2 billion and New Zealand imports from the European Union totalling NZ$6 billion.

EU imports to New Zealand amounted to 16.4 per cent of all New Zealand imports for 2006, rising to 16.9 per cent in 2007. At the same time, New Zealand's proportion of exports to the EU stayed almost unchanged at 15.4 per cent in 2007, compared to 15.5 per cent in 2006.

The EU is New Zealand's most valuable single market for sheepmeat, helped by the fact that the EU only produces 10 per cent of its own sheepmeat. New Zealand 's sheepmeat exports to the EU increased by 3 per cent between 2004 and 2007, amounting to NZ$1.5 billion.

The EU is a valuable trade partner for diary and wine products as well. In 2007, New Zealand's exports of dairy products was worth more than NZ$400 million. For wine, it was over a quarter of a billion New Zealand dollars.

The United Kingdom is New Zealand's most important trading partner within the EU with NZ$1.5 billion of merchandise trade exports in 2006, followed by Germany with NZ$800 million. New Zealand's investments in new EU member states such as the Czech Republic (over 400 per cent) and in Slovakia (almost 300 per cent) have grown significantly according to latest figures available for the two years following the time those countries joined the EU in 2004.

Visiting Europe

New Zealand depends on international trade. While the EU remains an important trading partner for New Zealand, New Zealand's trade focus is increasingly on the countries of the Asia-Pacific rim. The trade in services between EU and New Zealand in 2008 represented 50% of the total trade. Sectors of particular interest for New Zealand are air and sea transport, the telecommunications market and tourism.
