European Union Investment in Australia

2009 Update

Summary: The 2006 EU investment survey has been partially updated using new data for the larger EU companies and using updated member state data where this exists. The key points regarding EU investment in Australia are:

  • the EU is the largest investor in Australia, accounting for 33% of total investment ($A567bn) and 34% of direct investment ($A133bn) in 2008;
  • there are nearly 2,400 EU companies with a presence in Australia which have a total estimated turnover approaching $A270bn or just over 14% of total sales in Australia;
  • EU companies in Australia have directly created nearly 500,000 jobs; and
  • when account is taken of the flow-on (multiplier) effects, the total direct and indirect employment generated by EU investment is more than 1.4 million jobs, or just over 12% of the Australian workforce.
