Visit to Australia and New Zealand of Charlie McCreevy, European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services

Commissioner McCreevy visited Australia and New Zealand from 26 October to 3 November. He had a busy schedule of meetings with his Australian and New Zealand counterparts, financial associations and major businesses, and attended the Financial Services of Australia Conference in Sydney. download Commissioner McCreevy's c.v.
In Sydney, he delivered the European Australian Business Council oration on Monday 26 October.
On Tuesday 27 October, Commissioner McCreevy gave the Australian Ireland Fund University of New South Wales Peace Oration.
On Wednesday 28 October, Commissioner McCreevy gave a presentation at the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA) conference entitled 'Looking beyond the financial and economic crisis - lessons learnt and actions taken'.
From 29-31 October, Charlie McCreevy visited New Zealand. In Wellington, the Commissioner met with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bill English, Governor of the Bank of New Zealand Allan Bollard and Treasury Secretary John Whitehead. He also called on David Cunliffe of the Opposition.
The Auckland Chamber of Commerce invited the Commissioner to speak on the benefits of the Single Market, especially for New Zealand exporters to the EU. "At its most basic level, the single market project is about the removal of obstacles to entrepreneurs". He said "it gives businesses access to a very large market which should encourage them to invest more because the returns are likely to be greater." Commissioner McCreevy rounded off these official functions in Auckland with a call on the mayor, John Banks.
On 2 November Commissioner McCreevy made a presentation at the Global Foundation/EABC joint event in Melbourne.
