COUNCIL OF
THE EUROPEAN UNION
Luxembourg, 15 June 2009
Council Conclusions
on Iran
2951st EXTERNAL RELATIONS Council meeting
The Council adopted the following conclusions:
"The Council discussed the recent events regarding the Iranian Presidential election. It noted the
result as announced by the Iranian Electoral Commission and also the concerns regarding the
conduct of the elections expressed by several candidates. This is a matter that the Iranian authorities
must address and investigate.
The Council expressed serious concern about the violence on the streets and the use of force against
peaceful demonstrators. It is essential that the aspirations of the Iranian people are achieved through
peaceful means and that freedom of expression is respected.
The Council will continue to follow developments. It remains a priority for the EU that Iran
engages with the concerns of the world community, above all on the issue of Iran's nuclear
programme. The Council wishes to engage with the Islamic Republic of Iran on the basis of mutual
respect but it requires Iran to recognise and act urgently on its responsibilities and obligations."
