Europe Day celebrated in Canberra
This year's Europe Day celebrations were held in style at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra where guests had the added attraction of being able to view the stunning Turner to Monet exhibition. Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Australia and New Zealand, Bruno Julien, said Europe Day (9 May) was a time to celebrate the achievements of the EU to date and the turning of a new page in EU-Australia relations. Ambassador Julien was joined by Charles Curran, Vice-President of the European Australian Business Council and Chairman of the NGA Foundation who reinforced recent calls from business for a deepening and broadening of EU-Australia relations.
Also in the official party was Gregor Kozovinc, Charge D'Affaires for the Republic of Slovenia, representing the Presidency of the EU Council who highlighted the importance of culture in promoting good relations and Penny Wensley, First Assistant Secretary, Europe Division, Dept of Foreign Affairs & Trade who welcomed the new enthusiasm in Australia-EU relations.
Some 250 guests enjoyed special clarinet performances of the Ode to Joy and the Australian National Anthem by graduate from the Conservatorium of Music, Nicole Bates.
Official proceedings were closed with a few words from Ron Radford, Director of National Gallery, who spoke about the significance of the Turner to Monet exhibition.
